Household garbage, yard trimmings (NOT AVAILABLE AT M.L.King Blvd. location), bulky items and recyclables are collected at four staffed convenience centers throughout Whitfield County.

Waste

Household Garbage:

Bagged residential household garbage is accepted at each of the four Convenience Center locations. Limit of 10 bags per trip.

Bulky Waste (fees apply):

Items that are too big for your trash can are called bulky waste. For example, mattresses, sofas, large toys, and bookshelves. Bulky waste is accepted at all four locations. Bulky waste does not include construction or home remodeling debris such as dimensional lumber, sheetrock, flooring, shingles, plumbing, doors, timber, bricks, or other similar materials. 

A transportation fee of an average of $5 per item is applied at 3 locations: Westside, M.L. King, and McGaughey Chapel. There are no fees for bulky items delivered to the Old Dixie Hwy. location.

Home Remodeling Debris or Construction / Demolition Waste:

All construction or home remodeling waste is ONLY accepted at the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill. This includes materials such as windows, roofing, doors, cabinets, decks, fences, bricks, shutters, blocks, insulation, dimensional lumber, sheetrock, flooring, shingles, plumbing fixtures, flooring, siding, and landscape timbers. The disposal rate is $44 per ton or about .22¢ per pound.

NOTE: Single pieces of the materials listed above, such as one door or one window, may be accepted at the other Convenience Centers. Please see the attendant for assistance. 

Household Hazardous Waste:

Visit the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm to properly dispose of hazardous products you may have at home such as: paint, paint thinner, cleaning chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, swimming pool chemicals, and aerosol cans.

Service for Whitfield County residents only. Limit of 220 lbs. accepted per vehicle. Each item must be in its original container and have a label. Residential waste only, commercial waste is not accepted. Question about an item? Call 706-277-2545 or visit the Household Hazardous Waste page. 

Recycling

Items collected six days a week for recycling include:

  • mixed paper, newspaper and magazines

  • plastic bottles and jugs

  • cardboard

  • aluminum cans

  • scrap metal

  • scrap tires

  • bi-metal cans (steel / tin cans)

  • glass bottles and jars

  • waste oil (used motor oil)

  • lead acid batteries (vehicle batteries)

  • rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries

  • electronics (**only at Old Dixie Hwy. location)

  • yard trimmings / yard waste (**not available at M.L.King Blvd. location.)

To keep the convenience center patrons informed of the recycling program, a quarterly scoreboard is posted and updated at all four sites showing the amount of material recycled versus the amount disposed for the quarter and the percentage by weight of material recycled.

The Authority staff continually audits its vendors to ensure materials are properly managed when collected from the convenience centers. It's estimated that residents visited the convenience centers over 426,000 times in 2008.

Safety Regulations

Small children should be kept inside vehicle.

No pets are allowed out of the vehicle at the facility.

Drop-off of materials is only allowed during normal business hours.

Fees by material type:

Tires

LIMIT OF FOUR (4) TIRES PER CUSTOMER PER DAY AT EACH CONVENIENCE CENTER EXCEPT FOR OLD DIXIE. LIMIT OF (10) TIRES PER DAY AT OLD DIXIE CONVENIENCE CENTER.

Tire Fee for all 4 Locations:

  • Tires (up to 22 inches) = $2 per tire

  • Tires on rim (up to 22 inches) = $3 per tire

    • NO GOLF CART, ATV, LAWN MOWER, ETC. TIRES ON THE RIM WILL BE ACCEPTED.

  • Tractor trailer tires = $7.50 per tire

  • Tractor trailer tires on rim = $25 per tire

  • Only accepted at Old Dixie: Bulk Tires = $200 per ton

  • No off-road agricultural or heavy equipment tires

NO COMMERCIAL LOADS OF TIRES ALLOWED.

ALL CUSTOMERS MUST BE OUT OF THE FACILITY AT OR BY 6:00 PM MONDAY - FRIDAY AND 3:00 PM ON SATURDAY. LARGE LOADS THAT CAN’T BE UNLOADED QUICKLY MAY BE TURNED AWAY. PLEASE INSURE YOU ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO UNLOAD.

Mulch 

Mulch Loading:

Call 706-277-2545 for the current mulch loading location, and rates for loading large quantities of mulch.  (**not available at M.L.King Blvd. location.)

Wood chip waste or yard trimmings brought to the convenience centers is processed into a chunky mulch with a tub grinder.  The mulch material is available for residents free of charge.  (A loading fee may apply depending on quantity.)

Yard Trimmings / Yard Waste

Yard Trimmings:

  • Primary drop-off for residential, commercial, and large loads of yard trimmings / yard waste is the Old Dixie Hwy. Convenience Center. Secondary and smaller locations are the McGaughey Chapel, and Westside Convenience Centers. Yard Waste Drop-Off not available at M.L.King Blvd. Convenience Center.

    (NOTE: Large loads of yard trimmings / yard waste may be redirected to the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill.)

  • Yard trimmings must be free of trash, metal, pallets, and other debris.

  • Oversized logs or stumps are ONLY accepted at the Old Dixie Hwy. Landfill & Convenience Center location.

Commercial Yard Trimmings:

  • Brush = $34.00 per ton

  • Mulch = $26.00 per ton

  • Oversized Logs and Stumps = $44.00 per ton

Residential Yard Trimmings:

  • No charge for yard trimmings measuring less than 7 feet long, and less than 18 inches in diameter.

  • Commercial rates apply for oversized yard trimmings greater than 18 inches in diameter, and longer than 7 feet.

  • Whitfield County residents only, non-county residents will be charged commercial rates for all yard trimmings.

Electronics

  • CRT Television Sets / Computer Monitors = $10.00 each

  • Commercial Copiers = $15 each

  • Other Electronics = No Charge

  • Accepted only at Old Dixie Hwy. location.

Please note that there is a $10.00 fee for television sets and computer monitors with a tube or CRT (cathode ray tube). All other items can be dropped off for free.
